Engines rev, machinery beeps and a myriad of construction sounds continue to hammer away behind the fencing that hides the California State University, Stanislaus Science 1 building renovations.
Though it is hard to tell what exactly is going on within the gated construction site, walls within the building are completely demolished and infrastructure electrical work is underway.
Construction is on schedule, according to Melody Maffei, Interim Associate Vice President of Facilities Services.
The construction of the old science building will bring it up to current building codes as well make way for a brand new, more student friendly inside.
“I think it’s good that they’re adding to the science building,” Norma Jacquez (junior, Sociology) said. It’s going to be efficient and if it doesn’t affect our tuition, it’s fine.”
The main reason CSU Stanislaus received funding for the Science 1 building is for seismic strengthening, which has begun underneath the building. All asbestos in the building have been cleared with exception of the roof.
Abatement of the roof may be replaced late spring or early summer, according to Maffei. Exterior ramps will also eventually be brought up to current American Disabilities Act code.
One of the aims of the building is energy efficiency. When completed, the building will be self-sufficient in powering everything within itself except cooling and heating.
“We are also bringing in some natural day lighting, so the building is more green [and] we can harvest some of the natural daylight,” Maffei said. “So there will be a large opening in the roof to bring in a large skylight.”
“After I learned more about the project, I became excited over the changes our school is making,” Yvette Davidson (junior, Pre-Nursing) said. “As a pre-nursing major, I am excited to use the labs.”
