It has been said that records are meant to be broken. Just don’t tell Karenee Demery that they shouldn’t be broken so fast.
Demery, a sophomore striker for the California State University, Stanislaus women’s soccer team, is a major reason why CSU Stanislaus enjoyed its most successful women’s soccer season to date, with a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament to show for it. The berth was the Warriors’ first in the program’s history, and Demery earned the CCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player award.
Throughout the season, Demery torched defenses and was routinely the target of special treatment from opposing teams.
“I now get double and triple teamed and hit on purpose,” Demery said. “I saw it coming, but I knew my teammates would make them pay for doing that.”
Even with the added attention, Demery was able to net 16 goals, 11 assists, and 43 points in the 2011 season alone.
These numbers helped garner Demery a spot on the 2011 All-American First Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). She was honored on January 14 in Kansas City, and Demery is the first Warrior from women’s soccer to be honored with this prestigious award.
Demery’s performance also earned her first team All-CCAA, first team All-Region for NSCAA and Daktronics, and Daktronics All-American second team. These awards followed an impressive freshman year where Demery amassed numerous awards including Daktronics All-American Second Team and CCAA Freshman of the Year after posting numbers of 19 goals, six assists, and 44 points.
When asked if she ever thought she would have this much success this quickly, Demery pondered the question carefully.
“No, I knew if I worked hard I would eventually do well, but no,” Demery said.
Even with all the individual awards, Demery points towards a team accomplishment when asked what achievement she is most proud of.
“I would have to say winning the CCAA championship because we battled to get into the tournament and then we tore through it and won it,” Demery said. “It was pretty special.”
What makes Demery so successful and seemingly impossible to stop? Speed.
“I would have to say my speed, but also the people around me make it easy,” Demery said. “I have amazing teammates that know where to get me the ball and when to get me the ball to be successful.”
Demery also knows how to come through when it matters most, netting a hat trick (3 goals) in the CCAA championship game alone.
Speed, great teammates, and being clutch have helped Demery break the school record for career goals and goals in a season with 35 goals and 19 goals, respectively. It only took Demery two years to break the career goals record, and when asked how many she could score before her career wraps up in two years, a smile arose.
“I don’t know how many I have now, but maybe 40 or 50,” Demery said.
It seems safe to say that she will reach that goal within the coming year, leaving speculation as to how high the record can be before she leaves CSU Stanislaus.
Even with all the awards and success as a team, Demery has her sights set on more.
“Personally, just get better, continue to work on my shooting,” Demery said. “Team-wise, just win. I would rather be extremely happy winning games without winning awards. [I] definitely want another CCAA championship and more importantly, a NCAA championship. I expect big things.”
The humble player is also a star in the classroom. Demery is a Biology major with a 3.64 GPA. This exceptional performance in the classroom earned Karenee a spot on the Academic All-District team. The team also received the Team Academic Award from the NSCAA in December for a team GPA of 3.26.
Demery, hailing from nearby Merced, chose to attend CSU Stanislaus right out of high school for several reasons.
“It is close to home and I really like the small school atmosphere,” Demery said. “I met the team and thought I would do really well here.”
Demery is a star who continues to work extremely hard to get better every day, and in the future, this is sure to only lead to more outstanding numbers, broken records, and impressive awards. Make sure to catch her on the field while you still have a chance, and take part in watching history in the making.
