School is back in “Recess”ion.
California State University, Stanislaus students treated themselves to their usual afternoon meal, and added a heaping serving of Evan Olmos and Steeter—a serving of their music, that is.
On Thursday, Feb. 2, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) hosted this semester’s first “Recess” event at the Warrior Grill. Recess is held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. every week and is designed to give students a break from their studies. Last week’s “Recess” showcased live music by students Evan Olmos and Kenny Roderick.
“Recess is exciting, and I hadn’t known about it before. It’s definitely something I should come to every week,” Julie Keo (freshman, Psychology) said.
Evan Olmos (junior, Business) was the first musician to take the stage. He performed acoustic adaptations of several well-known songs. Some of the tunes he performed include “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon, “Yellow” by Coldplay, “Hey Ya” by Outkast, and “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns and Roses.
Olmos was a crowd-pleaser.
“He sings really well,” Amanda Punzalan (senior, Kinesiology) said. “I like how he puts his own twist to the songs that he sings.”
“I like his music choices. It’s cool how he takes the hip-hop and heavy rock songs and turns them into acoustic versions,” Chloe Lefler (freshman, English) said.
The second half of “Recess” featured Steeter, a solo project started by Kenny Roderick. Steeter played a series of original metal songs on electric guitar, including “Calling Time” and “Locked Out.”
“I like his style; I like listening to his type of music,” Jessica Harrison (sophomore, Cognitive Studies) said.
“Recess” will continue to take place in the Warrior Grill throughout the semester. Students who are interested in hearing more live music can take advantage of the next two Recesses, which will feature more student showcases.
“I encourage students to come out to Recess whenever possible, especially to support live music,” Olmos said.
Students can find links to more of both Evan Olmos and Steeter’s music on Facebook, and Steeter’s entire album is available for free to download through Bandcamp at Steeter.Bandcamp.com.
