BURNABY, B.C. – The Warriors women’s basketball team were unable to get an edge over Canada’s Simon Fraser University (6-1) in their weekend series, falling 52-95 on Friday and 46-76 on Saturday.
On Friday, junior forward Erin Godde put the first points on the board, stealing the ball and nailing a three pointer for the Warriors. Another three pointer combined with a free throw from junior forward Lauren Godde and a layup from junior guard Katie Staack put California State University, Stanislaus in the lead over Simon Fraser 9-6.
With five minutes left in the first half, the Warriors trailed 28-25 after a swift three pointer from L. Godde tightened the gap.
CSU Stanislaus’s next points came two minutes later when E. Godde found the open line for a layup. CSU Stanislaus kept fighting to get ahead of Simon Fraser, who led the half 38-27.
Sophomore guard Natalie Winters scored the first two points for the Warriors in the second half.
Sophomore guard Briana Cotton was the next Warrior to find the net, burying a jump shot minutes later followed by a layup from L. Godde.
CSU Stanislaus’s final score ended with a layup from L. Godde in the last minute of play. She led the team with 17 points in Friday’s game.
On Saturday, Winters’ three pointer jump started the Warriors’ game. Soon after, L. Godde stepped up to the line after a shooting foul, sinking both of her free throws.
Cabri put three more points on the board, leaving Simon Fraser ahead by only five points. Staack’s two layups would be the last four points for the Warriors in the first half.
Four minutes into the second half, Winters stole the ball from a Simon Fraser offense, taking the opportunity for a fast break and capitalizing on it. She continued with another layup and two three pointers, but CSU Stanislaus still trailed 44-25.
Freshman forward Kari Cherry chipped in with two jump shots and a solid three pointer by senior guard Devin Brown also contributed to the Warriors’ final score.
“We played better as a team than we have been,” freshman guard Alyssa Cabri said. “There was less individual play and more team play.”
The Warriors’ next game is on Friday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at home in the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
