For the Fall 2012 semester several clubs including The Pre-Health Society, American Chemistry Society Club, Biology Club and California State University, Stanislaus Science Faculty have teamed together to host several events open to the public in hopes of getting the community excited about science. The program that has been created is called Science Saturdays. Three separate workshops will provide students the opportunity to participate in the study of science-related topics on three different Saturdays.
The highly anticipated upcoming events have evolved in response to previous success matched with popular demand from students and the local community.
“An estimated 2,500 members of the community showed up to the first Science Saturday-type event put on by the Pre-Health Society last year,” said Dr. Mark Grobner, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Vertebrate Embryology, Department of Biological Sciences.
The first event this semester took place on Sept. 22: “Six-Legged Science Day.” There are two more planned for the rest of the year on Oct. 20: “Nanotechnology” and Dec. 1: “Body Works: Heart and Lungs,” open to kids grade 8 through 12.
“One goal is to exhibit the science building to the local community,” according to Dr. Grobner, “while the second is to bring students together in hopes of becoming science educators while sharing enthusiasm about science.”
One of the main factors leading to the creation of this new program was in response to the demand from the community for more exposure to science giving the younger generation an opportunity to experience science while learning in an academic environment of higher education. Tours of the Naraghi Hall of Science have successfully been orchestrated, including members of the community and elementary schools, to further promote academic learning of science.
The Service Learning Center at CSU Stanislaus has been involved in the Science Departments outreach to get students of all ages in the community exposure to science. Dr. Grobner has led activities in elementary school classrooms in the past with the help of the Service Learning center.
The next upcoming activity takes a look into Nanotechnology. It will be held Saturday Oct. 20 from 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and hosted by Drs. Elvin Aleman and Koni Stone along with students in the American Chemical Society Club. The final activity is a look into the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems. This will be held Saturday Dec. 1, from 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. hosted by Dr. Mark Grobner, students of the Biology Club and Pre-Health Society.
