The Unnamed Theatre Company (UTC) raised the curtains last Saturday for its first-ever Open Mic Night. Nestled in between apartment complexes and dentists’ offices at 3217 Tully Road, Modesto, the theatre is an unexpected bite of entertainment.
The night’s performances were introduced by Cameron Jackson (junior, Theatre and Psychology) who reassured the crowd.
“We are doing our best to provide a safe environment,” Jackson said.
A safe environment is resoundingly delivered. The theatre shares space with Kid Time Fitness Company, so while outfitted with the requisite red curtains and PA system, it is also small and cozy; inspiring one to be gentle to the participants.
The four core members of UTC, President Cullen Vance (senior, Theatre), Vice Chair Rex Stinson, Treasurer Cameron Jackson and Secretary Mia Carrick, rotated seamlessly from hosting to audience members to open-mic performances. The four of them are in equal parts nurturing, goofy, effortlessly hilarious and dedicated to the advancement of their project.
Modesto has a selection of open-mic events to choose from; some are reserved for the very hip and others for the very young. UTC’s open mic has a warm, welcoming atmosphere, one that waited patiently for my hysterical laughing fit to cease before picking up to the next line.
“Farting is, in fact, a symptom of farting,” said Vance while explaining the uproariously funny history of cat farts.
Don’t miss the UTC’s upcoming events, there will be an evening of improv on Oct. 20, a film screening on Nov. 3 and an additional night of improv on Nov. 3. “Like” UTC on Facebook to stay posted about future events.
