Tired of the typical college routine of homework, exams and more homework? Want to meet new friends outside of the classroom setting? Intramurals at California State University, Stanislaus are a perfect way to have fun with fellow students while keeping in shape.
“There is something in intramurals for everybody,” Jake Regal, Associated Students, Inc. Recreation Coordinator said. “It’s a great way to meet people, especially for freshman coming onto campus who want to get involved.”
There are men’s, women’s, and co-ed teams for each sport. Students are allowed to play on one team of their gender and one co-ed team.
“It is the same cost whether a student wants to be on just one team or play on two,” Regal said. “We want to give students the best value for what they are spending.”
Cost depends on the sport, as well as the length of the season.
Each sport is divided into two leagues: A, which is more competitive, and B, for students who have less experience and just want to have fun.
“I like the idea of intramurals because there aren’t very many outlets where you can play a sport with your friends just for fun,” Aimee Lopez (sophomore, Child Development) said.
Registration for fall intramural sports ends on Monday, Sept. 10, with the season beginning on Sept. 17. Fall intramural sports include flag football, volleyball, basketball and outdoor soccer.
There have also been changes in the intramural program in the past year.
“One change is there is now going to be a sportsmanship rating policy,” Regal said. “Teams are going to be held accountable for that sportsmanship, and each team has to make a certain average to make the playoffs.” A team’s season can end early if they do not meet sportsmanship standards.
Students participating in intramurals can also receive recognition for their achievements. The Big Five sports, volleyball, basketball, flag football, and indoor and outdoor soccer have All-Star weeks where players and staff vote for the all-stars of each team.
“The program has been growing, and we really appreciate the student support,” Regal said.
