I started writing this column last semester, but somehow I haven’t written an article about one of my favorite (if not my favorite) bands ever, Brand New.
Since they released “Your Favorite Weapon” in 2001, I’ve been a fan of Brand New. Maybe I’m a 12 year-old girl and have a huge crush on Jesse Lacey; or maybe I love everything the band has ever released. I’m not sure what it is, but I love the band.
Brand New last released an album in 2009 (not counting the re-release of “Your Favorite Weapon in 2011) when they released “Daisy,” to the criticism of many longtime fans. I thought “Daisy” was great, though, so I don’t know what these fans are complaining about.
But that was three years ago. Now the internet has had a flurry of rumors that claim Brand New is writing a new record. This has yet to be confirmed, nor denied, by the band.
Brand New did have studio time scheduled in April of this year, but they never used it. According to the message boards on AbsolutePunk.net, the studio time was used by guitarist Vincent Accardi and his brother.
So the question is, will Brand New release another record?
My answer is yes. Will they release a record this year? Highly doubtful.
We’re now in September, so I don’t see a new Brand New record coming out in the next three months, unless take a page from Glassjaw and randomly tweet telling fans that their new record is on Amazon, after having an album recorded for a year and half. I don’t see that happening though.
Do I want to see another Brand New album? Absolutely. Not just because I need the satisfaction of another release…well, maybe it’s partially that.
Mostly, I believe the next album will be really good. I think Brand New has something more to say since the release of “Daisy” and I want to hear what that is.
