Grizzly Rock Cafe serves as a home to a well-rounded menu and local entertainment
The Grizzly Rock Cafe opened its doors for business in December of 2007 and has been providing a family friendly atmosphere for dining and relaxation ever since. This laid-back, hometown restaurant offers a well-rounded menu as well as weekly concerts featuring local bands.
Every Friday night The Grizzly Rock hosts a variety of concerts.
“We are not exclusive to any one genre,” Frank Sanders, owner of the Grizzly Rock Cafe said. “We have everything from church choirs to psychedelic and punk rock.”
The Friday night concerts are held on the outdoor 6,000 square foot patio, which has its own fully stocked bar. Although alcohol is served at the venue, people of all ages are welcome to join the fun.
The restaurant has a laid-back atmosphere, or as Sanders says, “chillax.” Its décor consists of taxidermied wild life, and you will be greeted by a life-size wood sculpture of an elk at the front door. This setting gives it a country log-cabin feel.
“Instead of driving to Lake Tahoe, come to my cabin right here in Turlock,” Sanders said.
Unlike many restaurants in town, you will not find a television playing in the background while you eat at the Grizzly Rock.
“Our rule at home used to be no TV during dinner,” Sanders said.
He likes to recreate that family dinner feel with no distractions in his café. He even makes sure to keep the descriptions on the menu to a minimum in order to encourage interaction with the waitress. Rarely in today’s society do families actually sit down and have a home-cooked meal together, unless it is some sort of special day. According to Sanders, though, “every day is that special day” at the Grizzly Rock.
The cafe is best known in Turlock for its charbroiled hamburgers. They serve the burgers in a variety of styles: from the Maui burger with teriyaki sauce and sliced pineapple to the forest fire burger with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese.
“We pride ourselves on really tasty burgers,” Sanders said.
Customers at the restaurant can attest to the delectability of these hamburgers.
“The burgers were tasty and filling, and the quality of service was fantastic”Joe Whitehead (senior, Kineseology) said.
Burgers are not the only thing you will find on the menu. They also offer smoked tri-tip, ribs, and barbeque pulled pork as some of their most popular dishes. If you are feeling on the adventurous side you might even try one of their more exotic options such as the buffalo burger or grilled mahi-mahi tuna. Breakfast is another specialty at the Grizzly Rock Cafe, offering healthy portions of things like chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy made from scratch. Each biscuit weighs in at roughly ¼ pound. “They aren’t little things, they are big” said Sanders.
If, by chance, you don’t find something on the menu to your liking they are willing to make whatever you want.
“All you have to do is ask, if it’s in our store—if we have the ingredients here, we’re going to make it for you,” Sanders said.
Everything on the menu comes at a price that won’t empty your wallet, which is one reason CSU Stanislaus students enjoy eating at the Grizzly Rock.
“We are very affordable,” Sanders said. “You can have a half a chicken and all the pasta you can eat for ten bucks.”
Typically college students look for big portions at low costs and that is exactly what you can expect to find at the Grizzly Rock.
“My boyfriend and I sat down and ate until we couldn’t eat anymore and only spent about 20 dollars between the two of us” said Lauren Liming (Senior, Business). As far as quality and price, “You can expect to get as good as anyone’s, or better” Sanders said.
In an effort to bring more college students to his restaurant, Frank Sanders has started offering alcohol deals such as three fireball shots for just ten dollars. They also have 14 different craft beers on tap and an array of different alcohols. Sunday and Monday are among the busiest days at the Grizzly Rock. Sanders attributes this to the fact that they are just about the only thing open on those days.
“It’s all about enjoying yourself, and having a good meal at a really affordable price,” Sanders said.
