It is that time of year again, finals. We all dread them and try to avoid them, but they eventually will either make or break the semester. It’s time to buckle down and do all that homework you may have been avoiding and study for your final test. Turlock has some great places where you can study with a nice hot cup of coffee or maybe grab a meal.
The campus library has a lot of resources including textbooks, the tutoring center and it’s close proximity to the Warrior Grill gives you the ability to take a break from the many hours of studying to get some food and drink.
The coffee is usually pretty decent, but it wins out with convenience and price. If you bring your own thermos or coffee mug it will only set you back a dollar.
If you are looking to take your work off campus and change the scenery up your next best bet is the Frost Bakery. It was located on Main street, but recently moved to 2014 W. Monte Vista Ave which makes it just about a mile away, easy enough for a short walk or bike ride.
The coffee is great and the baked goods are even better. A cup of coffee is less than two dollars and is worth every penny. They recently started offering free Wi-Fi to their customers. They are open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. You can find more information at their website. http://frostbakeryandcafe.com.
A lot of students will try to study at Starbucks. Personally, I find the loud espresso machine distracting and so many people try to study there with their laptops that the Wi-Fi at peak times is almost unusable. If you get anything other than a black or iced coffee, it is extremely over priced.
Panera isn’t known for the coffee, but it is good. Not as good as I would expect for the price, but the food makes up for it. If you are going somewhere to study for more than a few hours it is well worth it.
It is much quieter than Starbucks, has better food and not as many people use the Wi-Fi so you are not stuck waiting for Blackboard to load (it takes long enough as it is).
If you are looking to save hundreds of dollars every semester invest in a french press and brew your own coffee at home. Not to mention you can study at home in your PJ’s without everyone staring at you.
For under $25 you can buy a french press good enough for a cup of coffee and get a great bag of fresh coffee. With just a few scoops of coffee grounds and hot water you can have a cup of coffee in three minutes for less than a dollar. As a college student every penny counts.
No matter what your study plans are make sure you get enough sleep or even more delicious coffee.
Finals week may be hard but a cup of Joe will make it an easier experience.
