California State University, Stanislaus’, (Stan State), Muslim Student Association (MSA) is a club on campus that many people are not aware of mostly because it is a fairly recent club.
President Najiba Afzal (junior, Biology) started MSA two semesters ago, along with the help of other Muslim students on campus.
Afzal saw that her religion was not being represented at Stan State so she decided to create a club that would.
Afzal stated that she also wanted to start the club because she wanted to “connect Muslim and non-Muslim communities”.
“We attempt to aid Syrian refugees in the Turlock area. Help to bring awareness to the Syrian crisis and the consequences of it, and what we can do,” Soraiya Shetab (junior, Pre-Nursing), another club member, said.
Members of the club expressed why they felt like it was important for their club to be active, especially at this time considering recent political events.
Members in the club say they want to raise awareness of their religion.
Naveen Akhtar (Senior, Psychology) is one of the members of MSA.
“[This club] wants to bring unity among all ethnic backgrounds and religions,” Akhtar said.
They want to show other people and religions that they are not how they tend to be portrayed.
In efforts to try to interest people in the club, the MSA has held pastry sales and have passed out cards with facts about Muslims and Islam. They also made an appearance at New student Orientation, speaking to students about their club and trying to get new members.
Even though MSA is focused on Muslims, members or prospective members do not need to have a Muslim background.
“We had two active members last semester who were not Muslim. One of them was Catholic and the other was a Sikh,” Afzal said.
Members state that anyone is welcome to join. They do not have any social media contact information, but they meet on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in room Bizzini 108. Their door is open for anyone interested.
