California State University, Stanislaus, (Stan State), opens up their aquatic facilities for the first time to students, community members and alumni.
From taking a dip in the pool to having swim meets and even water polo competitions, Stan State’s aquatic facilities now opens it’s doors.
Dan Holden, director of campus recreation at Stan State, was part of a number of staff and students who contributed to getting the pool operational.
“This is a great addition to the campus. The future use of the pool is an open book”, Holden said.
The pool has many features like 12 regulation 25-yard National Collegiate Athletic Association lanes, a spring board and a shallow area that was built to teach children how to swim. As a great addition, it also has a nice ramp that slopes into the pool for those who might need assistance getting in.
“Swimming is a great, overall, fun exercise for developing respiratory fitness, but also muscular endurance,” Janice Herring, a lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology, said.
Although the aquatic facilities are located on Stan State’s campus, faculty, staff and students would still be charged a $5 fee for a single session pass. Community members and alumni will be charged $7.50 for a single session pass. Weekly, monthly and special event passes are also available.
“This is not a student funded facility. The Chancellor went around to all of the campuses and identified major capital outlay expenses that were needed,” Herring said.
Explaining that the reason for this fee is due to the previous pool having many different types problems, one being the the pipes were too old and small; therefore, making the repairs necessary and at the same time expensive.
“As that is, there has to be income coming in to pay lifeguards, and so that’s why everyone is charged,” Herring said.
Certified Lifeguards are on duty anytime the pool is in use.
The pool is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., 12 p.m. to 1p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Swim passes are available for anyone online at campusrecreation.csustan.edu. For more information about the aquatic facilities on campus you can visit csustan.edu/aquatics.
