The Asian Pacific Islander Club (API) at California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), will be hosting its first multicultural fashion show to spread diversity awareness that surrounds Stan State and the surrounding community.
The fashion show will be hosted at the Event Center on May 13 and it will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The models will be modeling traditional clothing from different cultures, not just Asian Pacific Island clothing.
There is going to be a diverse of traditional clothing. Some are going to be modeling Hmong traditional attire, others traditional attire from Germany, and from many other different cultures.
The President of API Kathelyn-Cheyenne Sonico (junior, Biology) is very excited about the event since it is the first time the club organizes an event like this one.
“We expected about 15 people since it’s our first event like this one, but we have 25 so we exceeded what we expected. It’s very exciting,” Sonico said.
With this event, the API club wants to promote diversity within the community and at Stan State.
“We want to promote diversity especially here in Turlock,” Sonico emphasized.
Not only students from Stan State are allowed to sign up to volunteer to be models, but people from the surrounding community were also encouraged to sign up to be models for the event.
“People from Manteca, Stockton and cities nearby also volunteered,” Sonico added.
Sonico also stated, “Most volunteers have to be from Stan State.”
Rebecca Guzman (junior, Sociology) likes how the multicultural fashion show is not just for Stan State students, but also people from the community.
“I think it’s cool. A lot of people on campus don’t like to get involved with school stuff, so bringing people outside of school helps people get involved,” Guzman said.
Destiny Xiong (senior, Business) said that they wanted to take advantage of having a college campus in town and that it was the perfect place to bring the community together.
Rosemary Cervantes, a member of the community is planning to attend the event after her niece and best friend told her about the event.
“This is going to be a very nice experience because I will be able to see a very diverse traditional clothing that I’m not used seeing from the different cultures that are around us,” Cervantes said.
The members of the club, and everyone in charge of organizing the event, are very excited about the event.
“We hope we could make this event a tradition, and that we are able to have it every year,” says Xiong.
Xiong, the coordinator of the event and member of API club also said that they are going to have different performers at the event.
There is going to be a performance done by Polynesian dancers, one of the male models is going to be performing an acapella song in Spanish.
Doors are going to be open at 5:30 p.m. so guests can enjoy some of the things that will be offered.
This event is free of charge and everyone is welcome to attend.
