The Homecoming week culminated with the StanFest concert that California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State), and the Associated Students Inc. (ASI) organized for its students and community to attend and celebrate the ending of Homecoming.
Kehlani was going to perform at StanFest, but she cancelled her performance due to unforeseen reasons and Ty Dolla $ign became the main artist at the event.
Those who attended the StanFest concert were not only Stan State students, but also other people from the community and the surrounding cities.
According to Jonny Bustamante (senior, Business), who is part of Code Red and who helped out set up for StanFest, about 2,000 individuals attended the concert.
“We counted with two people and had 600 and about 1,380 the last few minutes we counted. So about 2,000 total,” Bustamante said.
While waiting for the doors of Stan State’s Fitzpatrick Arena to open, a line long enough to go all the way to the parking lot area was inevitably visible, making those who were in the line become anxious for the concert to commence. However, a lot of the people in the line were still excited for the music, regardless of Kehlani having to cancel her main performance.
The doors opened at 6 p.m., and before Marc E. Bassy and Ty Dolla $ign performed, Gospel Lee was pleasing the audience while they waited for Marc E. Bassy to perform.
Gospel Lee is a rapper from Edmon, Oklahoma, but currently lives in Phoenix, Arizona, and he sings Hip-Hop with lyrics that convey wisdom and life challenges. In fact, it was Gospel Lee’s first time performing in California.
At the end of his performance, Gospel Lee thanked Stan State for giving him the opportunity of rapping at the StanFest concert for the first time in California.
Around 7 p.m., Marc E. Bassy got on stage to perform, but before he got on stage DJ Sabazz was entertaining the crowd and everyone was very energetic.
Marc E. Bassy performed many of his songs, and the crowd was following him along.
Bassy apologized on behalf of Kehlani for not being able to make it to StanFest. As an implicit solution, Bassy sang a song that he sings with Kehlani, “Lock it up,” and asked the audience to sing to Kehlani’s part of the song.
The crowd went crazy, and started to sing the song with Bassy. Mostly everyone in the Fitzpatrick Arena sang Kehlani’s part of the song.
Bassy ended his performance for the night with his hit song, “You and Me.”
After Marc E. Bassy finished his performance, DJ Jerm kept the crowd going while they waited for Ty Dolla $ign to go to the stage and perform.
Around 8 p.m., DJ Jerm asked the crowd if they were ready for Ty Dolla $ign, and everyone in the crowd started to scream, resulting of his appearance on stage.
Ty Dolla $ign performed a little bit more than an hour, and during his performance the crowd in the floor and in the bleachers were singing his songs, and were enjoying his performance.
The Fitzpatrick Arena was going crazy while Ty Dolla $ign was performing, especially when he jumped into the crowd while singing and the crowd carrying him.
Further, Ty Dolla $ign went to the left side of the stage almost at the end of his performance and was on the floor singing to all the women who were close to him, causing the crowd to scream, clap and encourage his gesture.
At the end, even though Kehlani was not able to attend, everyone came out of the concert satisfied with the performance of both artists.
Shonty Vongsa, who goes to Thomas Downey High School in Modesto, California, bought her ticket because she wanted to see Kehlani and even though she was not there she had fun at the concert.
“I follow Kehlani and saw that she was going to perform here at StanFest. I wanted to see her, but she was not here. Ty Dolla was here and had fun,” Vongsa said.
Monique Aviles (freshmen, Mathematics) went to StanFest with two of her friends, Brianna Paniagua and Alexis Baca, who do not attend Stan State. All three of them had fun and enjoyed the concert, and were very happy with Ty Dolla $ign’s performance, saying it was worth attending the StanFest concert.
“It was lit,” Avila said.
