It is the beginning of a new semester at California State University, Stanislaus, (Stan State), which means that Rush Week, or Recruitment Week for some, is already well underway. Greek organizations are currently seeking new members.
Many Greek members could be found lounging by their tables and booths in the quad during the Club & Org Fair on Feb. 1. One booth was packed with fraternity brothers from Kappa Sigma.
One of Kappa Sigma’s members, Aldair Lima (senior, Business), seemed excited about Rush Week and was ready to share information about his fraternity to anyone interested.
“Today is Rush day. We’ll see people and go talk to them and post on social media. We say, ‘We’re having an event today. Come check this out,’” Lima said.
Each Greek organization has a set schedule of events ready to recruit new members. Many sororities, such as Alpha Pi Sigma, Delta Phi Gamma and Phi Sigma Sigma, have handouts that are printed with schedules of events and contact information.
Fraternities such as Kappa Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon rely mostly on social media sites to get their information across to the student body.
A recent Kappa Sigma event that was posted on Facebook was their Hawaiian Luau Social with Sigma Omega Pi that occurred on Feb. 7.
“Experience the social aspect of our fraternity and meet some of the lovely ladies in Greek life at CSU Stanislaus! Fun games and food for all, and a great opportunity to make friends and network,” reads the description on their Facebook page.
“I’ve never been bored,” Lima said about his experiences in Kappa Sigma.
Lima’s strategy is that if a student wants to join, he asks about that person’s interests and recalls if one of his fraternity brothers shares similar interests in order to recruit that person.
“We try to find people with similar interests and recruit that way. We have something for everybody.”
Leslie Moreno (junior, Social Sciences) from Delta Phi Gamma explained that the goal of her sorority is to promote unity, and one way they do this is through socials and get-togethers.
However, the main goal for all Greek organizations is to share information about their philanthropy. For Delta Phi Gamma, their philanthropy is supporting the American Cancer Society. They throw two events, Relay for Life and Making Strides, to support their cause.
Over at the Alpha Pi Sigma booth, Valeria Duarte (junior, Kinesiology) acknowledged that Alpha Pi Sigma is a Latina-based organization but is still open to everyone and that they encourage academic excellence.
Alpha Pi Sigma also does events for scholarships that go toward incoming students.
One of Phi Mu’s annual philanthropic events involves supporting Children’s Miracle Network at University of California, Davis’ Children’s Hospital by making tie-dye shirts.
A Phi Mu member, who spoke anonymously because she is a recruiter, said that her fraternity does not “rush,” but rather “recruits.”
Phi Sigma Sigma, whose recruitment theme this semester is the Friends television show, does an event called Kicks for Kids, in which they host a kickball tournament that typically fundraises approximately $300.
Other events for the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority include a Sisterhood Swirl frozen yogurt social and an Easter egg event for children on April 8th.
For Kappa Sigma, their philanthropy is helping out veterans. The fraternity brothers have made trips to Pinecrest and Turlock’s Donnelly Park to clean up the environment. All of their proceeds go toward military veterans and their families.
If you are thinking about joining a sorority or fraternity, you can see all of the Greek organizations listed on StanSync. You can also contact Sarah Velo, Stan State’s Greek Life & Leadership Programs Coordinator.
“We are distributing flyers using Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat,” Tau Kappa Epsilon’s rush chair, Majed Aromutairi (senior, Marketing) said.
“You can always come to the booth for more info,” Desiree Figueroa (junior, Criminal Justice) from Phi Sigma Sigma said, referring to the Greek tables and booths in the quad.
