Stan State is home to many Sikh students. Jakara Movement Club is one of the clubs that offers Sikh students resources and is a club for them to join.
Sikhs are people who follow Sikhism, which a religion founded by Guru Nanak Dev ji. There are around 29 million Sikhs in the world.
Jakara Movement Club president, Navroop Kaur (junior, Business), discussed why the club is special to her.
“What I want others to know is that Sikhi is a beautiful culture full of color and knowledge. The meaning of Sikh is to ‘learn’ therefore we are always learning how to leave behind a world with meaning and purpose,” said Kaur.
The club not only wants to teach others about Sikhism, but also aims for members to create memories while having fun.
Jolin Dhillon (senior, Accounting) discussed her favorite memory as a member of the club.
“We made themed cupcakes to give to the homeless a couple days before Halloween! We had a great time and everyone loved them,” said Dhillon.
People join this club for various reasons. Ranjot Gill (freshman, Psychology) joined it to connect with others.
“I was compelled to be a part of this movement by the various events we put together. Through these events we get a chance to connect to our Punjabi community and build a stronger bond. We also reach out to other non Sikh communities by doing events like Sacha Sauda (feeding the homeless) and the Know Your Neighbor event,” Gill said.
Jakra finds different ways to put on fundraisers and involve the community.
“Last year we did a holi event as a way to fundraise. Usually we will get parents and people who are interested in what we do for the community that will donate,” Kaur said.
If you are interested in learning about Sikhism and joining the club, they would like to have you.
“Although this is a Sikh club, everyone is welcome to join us and learn. We never force anyone to convert, all we ask is that our culture is respected,” explained Kaur.
