UC Merced held their 4th annual Hackathon called HackMerced on the first weekend of March. This was a 36 hour event in which teams were given the allotted time to come up with an app or website against other competitors.
This event was full of Stan State competitors who ended up taking home two different wins in their respective categories.
Computer Science Club President Austin White (junior, English) along with Jeffrey Cosio (junior, Computer Science), Sam Ruiz and Chris Gallo (sophomore, Computer Science) teamed up to win “Best use of Snapkit” with their innovative new website Greengenefood.com .
This website was developed during the 36 hour event. The team got the inspiration from the opening ceremony at HackMerced.
“They showed a video about food and where it came from and it gave us the idea, do people actually know where their food comes from?,” said White.
This website allows you to scan an item at a grocery store and find out where the item originally came from. The website is still in a demo stage, but they look to make improvements to it soon.
With Stan State’s first ever Hackathon coming soon in April, this gave some Stan State competitors just another chance to flex their skills in another event, even though spending 36 hours on the campus was not the easiest thing in the world.
Gallo recalled his experience sleeping on the campus over the weekend. “We ended up finding a classroom to sleep in during the weekend, unfortunately there was an air conditioner that made loud noises about every ten minutes and made it difficult to sleep,” he said.
The second team that competed for Stan State won “Best Social App” for their work on the site socialmaps.org.
This website takes your location and shows you the various things that you may not know about happening around you that you might be interested in.
This team consisted of John Solo, Michael Hastings, Angel Barajas and Jose Chavez.
These two teams showed what abilities Stan State students have to offer, and they will continue displaying their skills off when Stan State hosts its first ever Hackathon on April 27th.
Watch out for these two teams to come back out and enhance their apps even more or perhaps create a completely new website or solution to a problem in our community.
