Homecoming night at Stan State showcased the men’s Warrior basketball team and the Humboldt State Lumberjacks in a must-win game to keep pace in their division.
The Warriors started the game hot as they took a quick 14 – 3 lead in the first four minutes of the game.
However, this pace would not be kept as the game slowed down after numerous fouls stopping play were called.
The game came to a pause with the Lumberjacks climbing back into it. The Warriors had led at halftime: 41 – 35.
As the second half came about, the Lumberjacks brought the game to a tie at 46. The Lumberjacks took the lead for a short time with the score 53 – 50, but that would soon dwindle away when the Warriors climbed back with 8 straight points.
The last ten minutes of the second half, the Warriors were hanging on to their lead.
They ended the night with a win, the final score was 88 – 84.
Andy Cleaves (senior, Business Administration) scored 29 points for the team that night, and was feeling good about his performance.
“We were feeling it today, the energy from the crowd was great. It’s great to play in front of a crowd like that,” said Cleaves.
Rolaun Dunham (senior, Kinesiology) also put up 23 points and, like Cleaves, felt the energy all night.
“I was pumped on the sidelines to have a crowd like that. We were all feeling it from them, and we played well tonight,” said Dunham
After the game, Coach Paul Trevor had a few words to say about his team.
“I told them that they could shoot threes all night. If we were going to do that, we were going to lose,” Trevor said, ”We started driving to the net and putting up more points. With our win tonight, we’re only one game behind now.”
Homecoming night went well for the men’s basketball team. Many people came out to support their Warriors, and the team felt that energy.
Up next, the Warriors will take on Chico State this Saturday for Alumni Night at 5:30 pm!
