This spring, The Warrior Cross Cultural Center (WCCC) collaborates with the Stan State Library, The Undocumented Student Services and Dr. Dana Nakano in their launch of the Social Justice Book Club. They invite all interested bodies to join their monthly delve into human rights centered literature. Content and reads for the month range from poetry to graphic novels as well as fiction and nonfiction.

The topics the book club set out to explore are the very same that people endure and advocate against every single day. Personal identity, racism, decolonization and marginalized communities will be reflected in the works chosen for the month.

The WCCC is facilitating an opportunity to explore literature that might not be your first pick wandering around a bookstore.

February’s feature participants will be reading March: Book One by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin. March is a graphic novel memoir, illustrated by Nate Powell, and explores the first hand account of Congressman John Lewis. Readers will be taken through a colorful story through human and civil rights movements. Lewis and Aydin will distinguish the progressive bounds made since Jim Crow and the height of segregation as well as spotlight the personal rollercoaster Lewis took part in a struggle against nationwide discrimination.

The illustrations that make this memoir unique are inspired by the 1958 comic book “Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story.” Years later we can experience what Lewis and other student activists had when they laid their eyes on a novel much the same as March. From one giant to the next, readers can explore a rich, informative and heartfelt story that speaks for the hard won battles Lewis accomplished during his lifetime.
