As the holiday season has arrived, many companies in the area are looking for seasonal help to assist with the increase of holiday shoppers. For those interested in working, this presents an opportunity to gain some work experience while also having additional income to buy gifts for friends and loved ones during this holiday season.
Throughout the semester, students may have noticed that CSU Stanislaus has been offering events for to assist students in standing out in the job market while also increasing the effectiveness of their resume.
Hosted by Jaskaran Dhesi, this month’s Resume 101 class offered via zoom offered attendees information and advice to help make the most out of their resume while also maximizing and promote their professional skill sets.
The event began with an overview of some of the important tips to consider and questions to ask when designing a resume.
- Tailor your resume to position being applied to.
- Think about what key words stand out in the job description.
- How can you show your experience fits what they want?
- Research the company to discover their mission/vision.
- What is the company culture?
Another aspect to job applications discussed is the importance of understanding the information provided in the job description. Applicants can benefit greatly from dissecting the job description and seeing what qualifications are being asked for. Students can utilize this information and list the relevant skills and talents that they have that best match with what the employer is looking for.
Another resume component that was discussed was the listing of education. While many students may question whether or not to list an in-progress degree or if it will stand out enough to be worth listing in the first place,
“Education is something you absolutely want to have listed, even if you have not graduated from CSU Stanislaus yet,” explained Dhesi.
In addition to mentioning education on a resume, students will want to ensure that other categories of information such as objective, work experience, skills, and awards, are clearly identified. With many different formats available to organize a resume, it is up to students to find which one they prefer.
“I still use the chronological format just because it’s the easiest for me and works the best for me,” explained Dhesi.
After creating a resume, students must embark on the next task of applying to jobs that they have desire in taking on if offered a position. While there is a wide array of websites listing various positions that are hiring, here are a few that students can use when looking in the local area.
