This month marks the beginning of the Signal’s book club and I’m excited to announce this month’s pick! This month we will be reading We Are All Completely Besides Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler.
According to the bio on her website, Fowler is the author of six novels and three short story collections, including The Jane Austen Book Club and Black Glass. The latter is a collection of short stories. Some of her works have found their way onto the New York Times bestsellers list and she has received honors for others, including the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction and the Commonwealth medal for best first novel by a Californian. She received her Bachelors from UC Berkeley and her Masters from UC Davis.
Fowler is a writer that I discovered in one of my English classes here at CSU Stan. The piece we read from her, A View from Venus dealt with the themes of love, relationships, and personal identity in a unique way, so I’m excited to see how she approaches a full blown novel.
If you’ve been thinking of joining the book club or have been looking for something else to occupy your time, fill out the google form below. As far as getting your hands on the novel, there are a few options. The first is Amazon. They offer new and used copies of the book. I got my copy for $6 and last time I checked there were options that were even less. I would also suggest checking out your local library. While some may be still open for pickup, some branches do offer digital copies. My branch, The Stanislaus County Library, does so via the Cloud Library app, but I do know that others within this area may use another app called Libby. Definitely check out those options and support your local libraries. If you prefer audiobooks, there is a version available on audible.
This is very low stakes. We will read one book a month with a discussion that will be hosted via Zoom later on. This month’s meeting will be Thursday, April 30 at 7 P.M. (subject to change).
We hope you join us! Stay safe!
