Dr. Suzanne Espinoza, Vice President of Student Affairs, puts in her resignation, confirming that she will be transferring to Cal State East Bay.
“It was a really difficult decision because I have met so many wonderful students here and I’ve got a great staff,” Espinoza said.
She is leaving Stan State after seven years to be closer to her family and limit her commute time. “That’s really the temptation,” Espinoza said.
Challenges she faced during her time as Vice President of Student Affairs included budget cuts and turn overs of positions, according to her.
During her time at Stan State, she worked on a task force with the former Provost Dr. James Strong for more effective academic advising, which resulted in the Student Success Center. She assisted in introducing supplemental instruction in order for students to pass courses at a higher rate.
Espinoza also assisted in producing the Title IX online training that students are required to take every Fall. “That was a really important set of services for students who have experienced sexual violence, and so the fact that we’re better at handling students who are victims of assault, and we put together a training to address that was wonderful,” Espinoza said
She was also a part of building Stan State’s Career Development Center and Diversity Center.
“It’s going to be a little bitter sweet, but I have friends who call and I plan to come and visit and of course in the CSU we all meet with the campuses. We’ll be able to keep in touch that way,” Espinoza said.
President Ellen Junn released a statement by email to the campus at 12:30 pm today.
“It is with mixed emotion and great sadness that I announce the resignation of Dr. Suzanne Espinoza, Vice President for Student Affairs,” Junn said in her email.
She added that there will be a national search in fall 2018 to find a permanent replacement for the position Espinoza is leaving. “More information regarding leadership in the interim will be forthcoming,” Junn wrote in her email.
“It’s been a wonderful experience, and I am always going to remember the years here very fondly, and I learned a lot about the Central Valley and about this campus and about the heart that people invest in their work here. And I think that this campus does a lot of things right and serves as a model for lots of other campuses that want to engage students and make them successful,” Espinoza said.
This article has been updated to include the statement President Junn gave regarding Espinoza’s resignation.
