The Multicultural Fashion Show, was hosted for the first time in the spring of 2018 by the Asian Pacific Islander club (API).
API has decided to host it again this year. the event will be held at the Fitzpatrick arena on May 12.
API decided to collaborate with different clubs on campus like; MECHA, 7 Islands, Hmong student association and more. Over 30 student and community volunteers will participate.
Ariana Marsh, API member and Head of the fashion show committee knows that the school has more to offer than just Academics and food. The point of this event is to expand cultural dynamics and also bring more awareness to culture on campus:
“I know this campus has a big diversity in multicultural expansion we are trying to like subject that and find the key in that,” said Marsh.
The fashion show was opened to the public and took as many enthusiastic model volunteers API could find. Marsh explains that volunteers don’t have to worry about hair nor make-up as its provided during the show.
“In the collaboration we have our club API club, but also we are working with MECHA, Hmong Student association club, 7 islands union the community in general we are open with all the models and everyone and even Adrian’s Beauty is helping us with supplies, hair, makeup…so as much as help as possible, everyone to the public in general,” said Marsh
Members of API club think that it’s a great idea to show your background and ethnicity gracefully on campus.
Manisha Raju, an API member appreciates performances that have cultural satisfaction.
“Yeah I think that it’s very popular when you see…different cultural performances out in the quad, because it reminds everybody on campus that you know there is other cultures that are out there,” said Raju.
Apart from all the time and effort all the participating clubs are investing, the event is also supported by a $1,000 grant from the school in order to pay for food, advertisement, clothing, stage equipment and Make-up artist/hair stylist.
There will be performances from different clubs that consist of; singing, Tinikling dances,
Musical performances, and comedy skits from our MCs. The entertainment is all volunteers (mostly students) so no money went into performances, most money went solely on the cost of production.
With so much hard work from different clubs, with also so much diversity to be explored and valued. There are students that are proud of where they come from. With over 4 clubs working on this project and actually coming together as a team makes the outcome a mere spectacle to behold.
