Faculty at Stan State have begun to work on deciding the changes that will be made to the general education (G.E) requirements per California State University (CSU) executive order 1100.
Mark Thompson, (Chair, Universities Educational Policies Committee) led a forum to discuss the changes for the Fall semester of 2018, and address any concerns on Feb. 16.
The committee wants to make sure that the best interests of students are kept in mind while also complying with the new requirements as soon as possible.
“We want to be thoughtful, but there are also time pressures,” said Thompson.
One of the main areas of concern for the committee is Area E., individual resources for modern living.
Under the current system, students are required to take a minimum of four units from this area including both a three-unit health related course and a one-unit activity class.
However, new requirements state that campuses shall not exceed three semester units for area E.
This begs the question of whether or not the CSU will continue to require students to take a one-unit activity class.
Heather Deaner, (Chair, General Education Subcommittee) is holding the assumption that student interests will sustain the courses in question
Deanna Orosco (junior, Kinesiology) pays her own way through school, and would not take a activity class if it was not required.
“it’s expensive and I’m trying to get out of here as soon as possible,” said Orosco.
One of the options that was put on the table for what to do with all of these extra activity courses would be to make an activity course a university requirement rather than a GE requirement.
A change in this direction would have little impact on future students.
On the other hand, future students at Stan State may not have to fulfill the activity requirement at all.
“there can only be so many university requirements,” said Thompson.
