Anxiety is a common issue that face Stan State students because of the responsibilities they have such as: schoolwork, work, and family life.
In a 2015 survey with the National College Health Assessment nearly forty million adults suffer from some form of an anxiety disorder and for 75% of them had their first experience with anxiety before the age twenty-two.
Zach Chitwood (junior, Psychology) was surprised of how much time was spent on schoolwork.
“It was just like, paper after paper, exam after exam, and it seemed like I had a lab every other day and it was crazy the amount of time I was putting into school while I’m working,” Chitwood said.
The stress of trying to juggle all these responsibilities makes it more common for a student to feel anxious but it can be managed through effective resources that are offered on campus.
From the help of psychological counseling, the health center, and disabilities services, a solution can be found that best suits a student’s needs with managing their anxiety.
Laurie Hays, a counselor at Stanislaus State encourages students to seek help early so the issue will not become overwhelming.
“It would be so much more helpful for students get that early intervention while the problems are just starting out so that they can get through that tough period before it becomes overwhelming,” Hays said. “Each person responds to stress in different ways, for some people they can handle the broad range of most stressors well, but the coping strategies could be overburdened by the stressors.”
Anxiety is a subjective experience and is brought upon by a multitude of different reasons, and a student should not be discouraged about speaking to someone about their issues.
Ximena Espinoza (sophomore, Kinesiology/Psychology) thinks of schoolwork when she is working or doing other activities.
“I’ll be at work and I’ll be thinking I need to finish this thing it’s due at midnight and I have to get home on time, or like when I go out it’s like ‘oh my God! I could be studying right now, what am I doing?”‘
In order to deal with anxiety in a healthy and effective way it is best to seek help and isolate those feelings of the disorder before they start to affect other aspects of the student’s life. Understanding how to manage anxiety requires students to understand mental health and understand that these feelings and concerns affect many students.
