On Monday Stan State hosted an event at the Stockton Center for prospective students, alumni, current students, and the community to attend. Similar events will held throughout the year to educate people about the Stockton Center and the options available to further education.
Faimous Harrison (Stockton Center Dean) said, “The purpose of this event is about access to education, wanting the community to know that Stan State is committed to serving the community.”
This event was held inside the main building there were several booths set up, for example there was a photo and food booth for the guests to enjoy. Included in the set was Stan State’s Disability Resource Services, Associated Students Inc., and majors like Criminal Justice, Liberal Studies, and more. The booths were ran by students, faculty, and staff representatives to help spread the word about their departments.
Alumni, prospective students, faculty, and community members gathered around booths that were set up on the floor to learn more about Stan State and its programs.
Cari Rumayor (Coordinator of the College of Business Administration’s Student Success Center) said that she had several visitors at her booth, from Delta students to seniors in high school “that were already interested in Stan State and the relationship we have with Stockton, especially the Stockton Center. They were really interested in going to a 4-year school in their own hometown.”
Students from Delta were able to learn more about the Warriors on the Way program. The W.O.W. program allows transfer students from Delta follow a smoother path into Stan State. The majors offered were Business Administration, Liberal Studies, and Psychology, with several programs from each major to choose from. The program helps transfer students get their work done within a two-year sequence.
Jocelyn Castellanos, ASI Administrative Support Coordinator said turnout was great “we were able to speak to students anywhere from high school sophomores to Delta College potential transfers. It was nice to see such an interest in higher education by students from different walks of life.”
Representatives from the program were available to answer questions, hand out pamphlets, and free merchandise for anyone interested.
Michelle Retequin (Delta student) found out about this event through her guidance class presentation; about the Stockton Center and wanted to find out more information. She found the booths helpful and the information provided useful.
Retequin said “I got information I didn’t even know that I needed to know about” regarding her major and potential backup plans in college.
The intention was to spread awareness about the educational options available for students, whether they are still in high school or transferring from a community college like Delta.
There are a few more events remaining in the semester. Keep up to the date with upcoming events on the Stan State website.
