Associated Students, Inc. and University Student Union (ASI and USU) held a student scholarship fundraiser at two local Turlock restaurants, Pizza Rev and Dos Coyotes. This fundraiser was part of ASI/USU’s welcome week for returning and new Stan State students.
10 percent of all proceeds made at those two restaurants last Friday will be donated to scholarships available to all students enrolled.
The purpose of this fundraiser according to ASI Admin Support Coordinator Jocelyn Castellanos “is to get the whole campus community involved in supporting student scholarships for our Stanislaus State Warriors.”
“We really want to create as much of a support system for our students as possible,” she added
According to Stan State’s website, the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase last fall. The tuition was raised by $270, making the annual tuition rate for a full-time undergraduate student $5,742. The board of trustees estimated the tuition would generate $77.5 million in net revenue for student success initiatives.
When asked whether this fundraiser was a response to this tuition raise, Castellanos responded “ASI/ USU has been awarding student scholarships for several years now, and we are always looking for more ways to be able to provide support for our students.”
Castellanos added that there were plans already in the works for fundraiser ideas before the tuition hike. Adding the student scholarship fundraiser to the end of “Welcome Week” seemed like the perfect idea.
Joey Aquilar (freshmen, Kinesiology) said that more people who need financial help can further their education when fundraisers are planned out to help raise money for student scholarships.
Other students were in agreement that fundraisers need special attention to be successful. Nan Macedo (senior, Psychology) said that a fundraiser’s success may depend on how well it is planned out. Daniel Aguuar (student in the Criminal Justice major), when asked how fundraisers can be successful, said, “If people want to work for it, they will work.”
“We are hoping that this fundraiser is extremely successful and opens the door for future scholarship fundraising opportunities,” Castellanos said.
