With ASl closed for renovations and the library renovation initiative scheduled to begin next spring, Stan State students have lost a significant amount of study space. However, there are still plenty of peaceful and beautiful areas to study on campus. Here are The Signal’s top five study spots:
5. The Bench Forest
Although the courtyard in front of Demergasso-Bava Hall (DBH) has no official name, it’s been dubbed the Bench Forest for its array of benches covered by a canopy of trees. This spot made the list for its unique layout that provides students with ample seating and shade, but also offers the type of serenity that only nature can bring.
The Bench Forest is even more beautiful in fall; the leaves of the trees have already begun to change to bright yellows and oranges that will soon cover the trees and the ground. This spot is a perfect place for students ready for “sweater weather” and pumpkin spice lattes.
4. The Green Bench
In between the Bench Forest and the Communications department sits the Green Bench, perfectly nestled behind the stairwell. Nicknamed the Green Bench for its overflowing greenery, this study spot makes the list for its exclusivity and its “one with nature” aesthetic.
“I like it [the Green Bench] because it’s secluded and really quiet, you can still get a view of the sky, and the sun still comes through and it’s very relaxing,” said Noemi Acosta (sophomore, Psychology). “After a class you can just come here and sit.”
This hidden gem is ideal for those that prefer to study alone or in seclusion. The surrounding greenery and tile stepping stones also make this a peaceful place for those who need a space to relax or meditate in between classes or finals.
3. The Pergola
The Pergola sits next to the Village Lake near Dorothy & Bill Bizzini Hall. Adobe colored benches and strong cement pillars give this spot a prominent and distinguished look.
Josh Costello (Junior, English) said while studying at the pergola, “I didn’t know that [the library will be renovated], but I think maybe I will do a little bit more exploring…I like this spot because it’s protected from the sun but it’s still in a nice little open area”.
Not only does the Pergola offer overhead coverage with its beautiful wood roofing with green trim that still allows a cool breeze to blow through, but you also get the nearby sounds of Village Lake, as well as the view of blooming trees that stand on each side of the entrance.
2. Sequoia Lake and the Gazebo
Sequoia Lake and the Gazebo can be seen from Crowell Road and make the list for all they have to offer students at Stan State. The Gazebo, like the Pergola, provides students with a space that has the amenity of overhead coverage without being closed off from nature, as well as giving students an up-close view of Sequoia Lake and its feathered residents.
For students that would rather fully immerse themselves in the outdoors while studying, Sequoia Lake hosts several benches, bench-style tables and a well-manicured lawn that many students find themselves sprawled on with their blankets, sweaters and books. This spot is perfect for those who enjoy studying outside with a lakeside view and don’t mind having a duck or two as a study buddy.
1. The Island
The Island sits in the middle of Village Lake near the Pergola and it outranks all others for what this spot brings to the table. Although the Island isn’t its official name, it seems like the only one fitting to describe this treasure that sits behind Dorothy & Bill Bizzini Hall. The Island only has one accessible entrance: A green overarching bridge, which is stunning in its own right and adds another element of mystique to this tropical area on campus. Flowering trees and other flora add beauty and shade to this island where two bench-style tables sit.
Ashley De Reza (senior, Criminal Justice) said about studying on the Island, “I enjoy studying outside because I don’t like being in an inside environment when I’m studying. It’s just very relaxing here, hearing fountains and waterfalls.”
The Island not only has a breathtaking location and view, but also provides the soundtrack of nearby waterfalls that give students the peace and tranquility that are oftentimes needed while studying. This spot seems to have something for every student to enjoy, whether it’s the view, the sounds or the privacy; the only problem students may face in studying at the Island is trying to get there first!
