The Stan State women’s soccer team took on the Dominguez Hills Toros Friday, Sept. 14. The Warriors were coming off a loss, looking to regain after a three-game win to the start of the season and a tie the following game. This season they stand at a 3-1-1 record overall.
After a rough two games, the Warriors bring it back home where they are undefeated this season.
Friday’s game was the first conference game of the season.
The first half of the game was close as both teams were back and forth on the field. The Warriors were the first on the board, with a goal from Autumn Halverson and an assist from Ilena Rivera.
The Toros applied pressure after the first goal during the first half, but the Warriors defense was too strong and held the score at 1-0.
The second half of the game, the defense held strong despite the Warrior’s goalie, Haley Crook, suffering an injury. Alyssa Herman came in for the rest of the game and held off the Toros offense. “I think we are a pretty diverse team and we have a pretty deep bench, and I think that anyone who goes on, we know they’re going to do a great job, we just kind of support each other,” Shayla Simonich, Defender, said. Despite losing a key player during the game, the team bounced back and supported Herman to finish off the game.
“We got fouled a lot, and we played well under pressure and kept our composure,” Crook said.
The Warriors won the game 1-0 against them and are now 4-1-1 for the season. This shutout win continued their undefeated win streak at home.
“We started the conference with a win, and we are excited for Sunday’s game,” Hannah Lewandowski, Forward and Defender, said. The Warriors play again on Sunday, Sept. 16 against Cal State Los Angeles, starting at 11:30 am at the Warrior Stadium.
The team is confident and looks to continue their momentum and chemistry throughout the season.
