The Warriors men’s basketball team took on the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos Saturday night, in Stan State’s second home game of the season. The Warriors looked to break their short two game losing streak and get their first win at home.
In the first half of the game, the audience saw hard fought defense along with some miscues by both teams as they both had seven turnovers. The Warriors struggled to score in the first half until the last five minutes. They were able to turn it up and take the lead after the first half, 28 – 21.
Cal Poly would come out of the locker room looking to win this game as they took a lead early in the second half and continued on relentlessly. The Warriors would play from behind most of the second half.
With the score 60 – 54, and Col Poly leading, the Warriors looked to make a comeback, but time was not on their side with only a minute and a half remaining in the game. Ty Davis (junior, History) tried to cut the lead in half with a three-point shot but missed.
Joseph Alvarez (junior, Psychology) was able to get the offensive rebound in a group of Broncos and get a pass off to Darius Scott (junior, Criminal Justice) who hit a three with a little over a minute remaining in the game to cut the Broncos lead down to three points.
The Warriors held their ground and were able to get the ball back. With 38 seconds left in the game, Scott aired up another three pointer and tied the game, which drove the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Broncos tried to score to stop the game from going into overtime, but it was to no avail. The Warrior went into their third overtime game in seven games this season.
In overtime, the Warriors dominated the next five minutes, outscoring the Broncos 18 – 11 and giving the Warriors their win.
After the game, the Warriors locker room was filled with cheers and players celebrating their win as loud as they could.
Fans exiting the arena were also celebrating the win and couldn’t believe what they witnessed.
“That was one of the best games I ever witnessed,” one fan in the crowd remarked.
Some other fans expressed that they couldn’t wait to watch this team again.
Coach Trevor, after the game, was proud of his team. “Of course we don’t want to have to play from behind like that, but they did what I wanted them to do, they shared the ball. We had 21 assists tonight, and that is the most we’ve had in a game all season. We played great defense and we beat a really good team, I’m proud of them,” Trevor said.
If you haven’t gotten yourself out to Fitzpatrick Arena for a Stan State men’s basketball game, you’re next chance is Dec. 19th when they take on Cal State Bernardino.
