Stanislaus State has a new fraternity on campus. It is trying to change Greek life on campus. The fraternity focuses on building strong leaders, making friendships, and giving back to the community. As a result, it is quickly becoming well-known.
“Being part of Alpha Sigma Phi is more than just joining a fraternity. It’s a brotherhood,” said Andrew Silvera, a freshman psychology major and Vice President of Growth. “We care about each other, academics are important to us, and we’re here to make better men for the future.”
According to Alpha Sigma Phi, it is built on the strong connections between its members. Jonathan Diaz, a senior studying agricultural business, explained why he joined.
“The school has given me so much, and I wanted to give back to students in the same position as me,” said Diaz.
Weekly gatherings help members build connections.
“Every Thursday night, we meet up for pizza, wings, and games,” said Daniel Chavez, a senior criminal justice major and Vice President of Communication. “It’s a great way to connect and build relationships.”
The fraternity has fun traditions that keep things light and enjoyable.
“Every time we go out to dinner, we tell the staff it’s the president’s birthday,” joked Silvera. “It’s our little tradition.”
Alpha Sigma Phi wants to change how people think about fraternities.
“A lot of people assume the worst about Greek life,” said Chavez. “But we’re part of Stop Hazing, focusing on academics and supporting each other.”
Dalton Baker is a junior studying business finance and the fraternity president. He shared the group’s overall mission.
“Leadership isn’t just about being in charge,” he said. “It’s about helping the people around you succeed. We do this together.”
The fraternity’s mission statement, “Better the World Through Better Men,” guides its actions on campus.
“We’re not here for wild parties or hazing,” said Silvera. “We’re building better men who make a difference.”
Alpha Sigma Phi is new, but its members are already making a difference on campus and in the community.
“We’ve been helping with other organization’s events and donating our time,” said Diaz. “Next semester, we plan to host our philanthropy projects.”
The fraternity supports causes like RAINN and Stop Hazing. These causes focus on respect and community service.
“It’s about being good leaders and giving back,” said Silvera.
The fraternity offers members chances to grow personally and professionally. Baker shared his thoughts on his duties as president.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s taught me how to stay accountable and balance priorities,” he said. Silvera discussed how his position as Vice President of Growth has helped him develop valuable skills.
“I’ve learned how to talk to people, understand their stories, and explain how Alpha Sigma Phi can benefit them,” he said. “These are skills I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Chavez oversees social media and communication. He explained how his job connects with his goals.
“This position has helped me improve my communication skills, which is important for my major and future career,” he said.
Alpha Sigma Phi invites students to join during spring recruitment.
“You don’t have to be a certain type of person to join,” said Chavez. “We welcome everyone who wants to grow and be part of something bigger.”
Silvera expressed excitement about the fraternity’s potential.
“This is an opportunity to build something from the ground up and leave a lasting legacy,” he said.
The fraternity is also open to collaborating with faculty, staff, and students on future projects.
“We’re always open to working with anyone who wants to connect,” said Diaz.
The members of Alpha Sigma Phi have clear and ambitious goals for their future.
“We want to grow, double in size, and set the example for other fraternities,” said Baker. “We hope Stan State becomes a model for responsible and hardworking Greek life.”
The fraternity hopes to gain more support from institutions for Greek organizations.
“We want to show the campus that we’re a positive force and a group of hardworking individuals,” said Baker.
