College break-ups are hard, no matter who did the dumping, the emotions from an ended relationship are overwhelming. But, enough with the sappy quotes, cliché sayings and sob statuses.
There are a few rules to follow when coping with the heartbreak to expedite the recovery.
MUST DO
1. Immediately cut off all social network association. In the article “3 Rules to Get Over a Breakup,” Belisa Vranich, PsyD, states that “technology is a huge obstacle, Facebook and Twitter make it incredibly difficult to move on because you’re bombarded with reminders on a daily, even hourly basis.” As tempting as it is to obsess over an ex’s profile, do not be subjected to that. And no, that status is not about you!
2. Re-decorate! Creating a new look will help ease the heartache, and rid the room of the haunting memories that come up when least expected. However tempting it might be, do not hold onto the night stand pictures or old love notes! Pull out the creative stop and go buy a new bed set or desk!
3. Stay busy. Most breakup articles give advice to find a new hobby or interest, but only because it really works! Too busy to find a completely new hobby? Join a different workout class or start a weekly girls/guys night! Just the idea of change will help the process of moving on,
MUST DON’T
1. Post a pathetic quote or status. Please. We have all seen the depressing country songs and Marilyn Monroe quotes. Stop it. Everyone is aware that break-ups can feel like the end of the world, but blasting it all over social media does not provide any real satisfaction.
2. Cling to memories of the past. Admit it, following the initial breakup it’s desired to embrace the pictures, clothes and movie ticket stubs because, well, there might be a chance of reconciliation. This is not a healthy idea. Keeping those “comforts” around is just denying reality. Get rid of them, and begin making new memories.
3. Have a negative outlook. Nobody likes a Debbie-downer. In order to move forward and get back on track, avoid feeling stuck. It’s natural to experience grief following a break-up, but don’t let destructive thoughts gain control. Take each day at a time, and stay positive with the knowledge that the wounds will heal.
