With the Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks making tremendous playoff runs in their respective sports, along with the recent success of the San Francisco Giants and San Francisco 49ers, it is obviously an exciting time to be a fan of Bay Area sports right now.
It is rare for a sports town to see as much success as the greater Bay Area has in recent years. Naturally it is time to wonder, is the San Francisco Bay Area the greatest sports town in the nation?
The other areas that give the Bay competition are New York, New England, Chicago and Los Angeles. But as of right now, none of these places are as successful in the sporting world as the Bay Area.
Los Angeles is the easiest city to eliminate from this conversation. The Dodgers and Angels are two of the worst baseball teams in all of baseball, while the Lakers and Clippers were quickly eliminated from the playoffs in the first-round. Next!
Chicago also has two of the worst teams in baseball in its city limits – the Cubs and the White Sox. But Chicago also has the Bears, who just missed the playoffs in football, the Bulls giving the Heat a run for their money currently in the playoffs and the Blackhawks, the best team in hockey. However, the Cubs and Sox bring their city down considerably, eliminating them from this argument.
Now the conversation becomes real.
New England offers the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics and the Boston Bruins. The Red Sox, coming off a horrid season, have somehow managed to be contenders in the American League. The Patriots are consistently a powerhouse in the NFL and the Bruins won the Stanley Cup just two seasons ago. Although they made the playoffs this year, the Celtics are at the end of their run with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, making them the blemish on New England’s bid.
As for blemishes in New York, the Mets and the Jets take that honor. Of course, the Yankees, Knicks and Islanders help the city get into the conversation, but the Mets have been bad for a few years now and the Jets are the laughing stock of the NFL. The Yankees cannot be overlooked, though, considering they rank as the most successful franchise in all of American sports with 27 World Series titles under their belt. The Yanks single-handedly keep New York in the conversation, but it just is not enough.
The Bay Area is currently the best sports town in all of America.
The Giants have won two of the past three World Series titles and have one of the best records in baseball this season. The 49ers were one yard short from being Super Bowl champions and are still considered the best team in all of football. The Warriors, only two games away from reaching the conference finals, are having their best season in nearly two decades. Warriors’ fans are also considered some of the best fans in basketball to boot. The Sharks just advanced to the second round of the playoffs by sweeping the third-seeded Vancouver Canucks. The Oakland A’s are coming off a miracle playoff season that enticed the world of baseball, and had fun while doing it.
Of course, the Raiders call the Bay Area home, which brings down the Bay a few notches. But having two World Series crowns, a near Lombardi trophy and two other teams in the playoffs keeps the Bay Area on top.
No other city has the same résumé as the Bay Area currently boasts. All of the successful teams currently residing in the Bay put it at the top of the list of best sports towns in America.
Enjoy it fans, who knows how long it will last.
