Get ready to exercise your green thumb because Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) is hosting an “Adopt a Pot” event on campus Nov. 20 for all students. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the quad area. Its purpose is to inform the student body of the agricultural struggles various communities face and how students fit into that picture.
There will be plenty of information available as well as stations where students can decorate their very own flower pot and plant a seed of their choosing.
This upcoming Wednesday offers a great opportunity for students to develop a better understanding of agriculture and the hardships that come along with it.
Turlock is a town that is very involved with this sort of lifestyle, and its surrounding areas, including Denair, Hughson and Hilmar, are also very embedded in the farming industry.
“It’s exciting to hear the school is taking initiative and educating students on this topic,” Darren Borrelli, a local farmer, said.
“A lot of people don’t realize the importance of agriculture and how much it impacts our lives.”
It is not a surprise the student body lacks knowledge on this subject seeing as it is not typically something that most students have to dwell on or worry about.
“I came from a city with little to no farm land,” Sadie Crowe (senior, Psychology) said. “I am definitely interested in better understanding how I can help the environment.”
Even if some students are not interested in learning more about agriculture, they can still come and enjoy fellowship in the quad with their peers.
Raising awareness will help students see agriculture in a different light and learn how their lifestyles actually affect the entire process.
It is not something that is discussed on a regular basis, so ASI encourages students to go out and learn something new about how they can help the world they live in.
As Thomas Jefferson once said: “Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness.”
