Are you interested in getting fit, but hesitant to do it alone? Join the Student Recreation Center’s (SRC) Group Fitness Training and bring your friends along.
“We’re happy to promote good health and exercise any way we can,” Dan Houlden, SRC Director, said. “A few of our usual personal training members showed interest in group training.”
Group Fitness Training has not been offered at California State University, Stanislaus in the past. If the turnout goes as expected, there are no intentions of discontinuing it.
A regular one-on-one personal training session at the SRC, even for students, costs $30. The benefit of participating in Group Fitness Training is the lowered price per individual.
If your group consists of four to six people, it is $10 per person; if your group has seven or more individuals, it’s just $9 each.
“Personal training can be intimidating,” Shayleen Jernigan, (senior, Communication Studies) said. “I’d feel a lot more comfortable in a group setting where I’m not getting 100 percent of the attention 100 percent of the time.”
Many of the usual one-on-one personal trainers will be in charge of the Group Fitness Training, all of them with their own personal training certificate.
The few who don’t have certificates are all majoring in Kinesiology and have adequate-to-expert knowledge and experience with training – which is more than most average personal trainers in other gyms do.
Group Fitness Training, as well as the SRC in general, is open to students, staff, faculty and alumni only. It is not offered to the community or even spouses of faculty or staff.
Although Houlden mentioned that this has been a debated topic in the past, there is a concern with the limited space of the facility, and they want to keep the SRC available for students to utilize.
In order to sign up for Group Fitness Training, visit the SRC on campus and sign up at the front desk. It is important to sign up days before you wish to have your workout so that the trainer can find a time that will work for them and everyone in your group as well.
You must pay upfront when signing up and have your Warrior ID card with you.
“We really want to promote exercise and good health to everyone here [at CSU Stanislaus],” Houlden said.
“It helps the brain, it helps the socialization for the students and it’s just a great lifestyle.”
