Next week, Code Red Entertainment will present their second annual “LGBT Week” with support from Love Evolution – an LGBT club on campus. Running Oct. 21 to 25, the campus community is invited to join in five days of fun festivities that will celebrate the LGBT community on campus.
Not only does each event offer free opportunities for students to have a little fun, they also bring much-needed social awareness to the public.
“Basically, [the event is] to celebrate the LGBT community: celebrate how far it’s gotten since it became a thing,” Hector Vera, president of Love Evolution, said. “And to celebrate the fact that we’ve made it this far and achieved so much and [that we] are more well-known, not in the closet anymore,”
Though the event is celebrating the LGBT community, all students are welcome and encouraged to share in the merriments.
“To me, it would just be coming to the event and then having a great time,” Jose Legaspi, University Student Union Social Awareness Programmer and LGBT Week Event Coordinator, said about the best way for students to participate.
But Jessica Sanchez, a Code Red Entertainment Volunteer and Social Awareness Volunteer, brought up an important point about students participating in the events:
“For me it actually would be the attendance,” Sanchez said. “If you do attend, then you do learn something from it. And from it, you can grow.”
Monday, Oct. 21: “Let’s get one thing straight, we aren’t!”
Kicking off the week’s events, you can walk through the quad from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and learn about the progression of the political movement and achievements of the LGBT community, since its inception, from information on A-frames. You can also earn raffle tickets by answering questions about what you’ve learned. The prize? A Pride Pack, which includes two front-row tickets to see the annual drag show on Friday among other things.
Tuesday, Oct. 22: “LGBT Movie Night”
Put down that heavy textbook, grab a friend and come on down to the Event Center. Have a laugh or two while you watch “But I’m a Cheerleader,” a classic comedy screening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If the movie isn’t enough to pull you from your study-time, let the free popcorn and free candy buffet draw you in.
Wednesday, Oct. 23: “Pride Yourself Up!”
Need a sweet pick-me-up? From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can make your own rainbow Sandy Candy tube in the quad and enter a raffle for a chance to win two front-row tickets for the drag show on Friday.
Thursday, Oct. 24: “Closets are for Clothes: Pride Parade”
Show your support for your fellow students in the pride parade at the quad or sign up to be in it yourself at the Warrior Activity Center (WAC). While you’re there, you can also enjoy student impersonation performances, music, free food and activities, like free henna tattoos. The best student impersonator and the best float in the pride parade will each receive a $50 gift card and two front-row seats to see the drag show on Friday
Don’t forget to enter Code Red’s Instagram Caricature Drag Competition after a caricature artist draws a fierce rendering of you in drag. The event begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. – you won’t want to miss out.
Friday, Oct. 25: “4th Carnival Cabaret Drag Show”
The lovely performers of Carnival Cabaret will take the stage at the Event Center once again for a fun-filled night of music – and a little light ribbing. This week’s free finale event goes from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
For more information about LGBT Week, visit the WAC located in the University Student Union next to Main Dining and one of the informed staff will be happy to help you.
For more information about Love Evolution, find them on Facebook at facebook.com/CSUStanLoveEvolution or check out one of their meetings on campus. The club meets in the Lakeside Conference Room of the Event Center on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
