On Aug. 28 in the Event Center, Associated Student Incorporated (ASI) held the first Comedy Night of the semester, one of many that they plan to have in the coming months.
First to take the stage was Johan Miranda. Miranda works a lot in the Bay Area. In September, he will have been in the comedy business for three years.
Miranda seemed a little inexperienced and nervous. There was an awkward silence in between his jokes. Miranda definitely got some good laughs out of the audience, but they just weren’t consistent, and his nerves showed.
“I feel like he was kind of prepared but unprepared at the same time,” Alexis Hollands (freshman, Business Administration) said. “But he was actually funny.”
After Miranda finished his act, he introduced the featured performer, Dillon Garcia.
Garcia was the youngest comedian ever to be featured on Comedy Central, and he does shows throughout California.
Garcia was a breath of fresh air, making the audience laugh from the start.
He made his set relatable to students by talking about trying to find a job and asking parents for help with homework. He cracked jokes about there being nothing to do in Turlock.
“College campuses are always fun. Garcia said. “I can always relate to them, I feel like I’m talking to my friends.”
Garcia made real life situations for students funny, such as growing up mixed-race and the culture shock of going from one household to the next within his family.
His dramatic delivery made the jokes twice as funny. When Garcia did an impression of his dad talking on the phone, his facial expressions and confidence kept the laughter coming.
Garcia even made me laugh so hard that I snorted loud enough for him to hear and crack a joke about it. As his act continued, more people arrived until almost every seat in the house was filled.
“I absolutely loved it,” Hollands said. “I was looking for a laugh and I got it.”
Overall, this Comedy Night was very entertaining. The event was a success for ASI and a great addition to Warrior’s Welcome Week, giving confidence that there will be more enjoyable events to come.
