Sept. 10, Apple announced the release of two new iPhone models, the 5c and 5s, in replacement of the current iPhone 5.
The iPhone 5s is the more equipped, updated model of the two. The 5s model is available in silver, space gray and gold, with the outer casing made of metal.
The 5s holds the same features as the iPhone 5, with added technological updates. The newest addition is the Touch ID, a fingerprint identity sensor on the iPhone’s home button.
Touch ID allows users to unlock their phone or make purchases at the iTunes store, App store and iBookstore, with the scan of a finger. The fingerprint identity sensor can read the user’s fingerprint, no matter the orientation.
“Too much technology for me to handle,” Jared Carden (senior, Business Administration) said. “But I know a lot of people are excited for them.”
The second model released is the iPhone 5c, which has a plastic outer shell reinforced by an inner steel frame. It comes in white, blue, pink, green and yellow.
“My friend told me about it,” Brennan Koeller (freshman, Liberal Studies) said. “I think it’s kind of cool that they have colors.”
Each iPhone 5c comes with a four-inch retina display screen, along with an eight megapixel iSight camera and LED flash. The phone also comes with Apple’s most current operating system, iOS 7.
Apple calls the new iOS 7 operating system, “the start of a new chapter.” iOS 7 presents new features, such as Control Center and Air Drop, allowing side-to-side users to share documents or photos via wi-fi and bluetooth, as well as iTunes Radio.
Both models allow up to 10 hours of talk time over 3G networks, and eight hours of Internet use, before recharging.
Along with the new iPhone models, Apple has designed cases to go along with each phone. The 5s case is made of leather, and the 5c case is made of silicon, with 35 round holes on the backside in order for the color of the phone to show through. Both cases are available in six different colors.
The iPhone 5c is the cheaper of the two models, priced at $99 for those who do not want to spend as much. The 5s is priced starting at $199. Both prices are available with two year contracts through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.
A pre-order option is currently available for the 5c model.
Along with the Apple Store, large retailers, such as Target and Wal-Mart, will be selling the iPhone 5s and 5c beginning tomorrow. Wal-mart will be offering each model at reduced prices, starting at $79 for the 5c and $189 for the 5s.
When asked if he planned on purchasing one of Apple’s newest models, Koeller replied, “well I’m up for an upgrade soon, so probably. But if I wasn’t up for an upgrade, then no.”
