With a spectacular 74-73 double overtime victory over No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona, men’s basketball clinched a playoff berth in the upcoming California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Playoffs.
The Warriors hold the fourth seed in the playoffs and will face Cal State Los Angeles in the first round (March 6). The tournament will be held at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
Marcus Bell was fouled with eight seconds left in the second overtime period. He sank one of his two free throws and clinched the win for the Warriors. Bell finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Defending CCAA Player of the Week Chris Read added 18. Sam Marcus was efficient from the free throw line, adding 12 of his 15 points from the stripe.
The game was very close throughout; no team led by more than six points for the entire second half and overtime periods.
The final regular season game came against Humboldt State, and the Warriors did not disappoint. Led by Bell’s 30 points, the Warriors beat Humboldt 84-72.
With the win, the Warriors finished the regular season 18-8 overall and 14-8 in the CCAA.
The Warriors tied the mark set by the 2002-03 team for best home-court record in a season by going 12-2 in Fitzpatrick Arena.
This year’s team came close to setting their own record. Their two home losses came in the final seconds with the ball in their hands. The 18-win season also tied the mark set by the 2002-03 team. The Warriors split the season series against Cal State L.A., winning one at home and dropping the other on the road. The game can be listened to locally on KEFC 100.5 or globally on kefc.net. Tip-off is scheduled at 12:05 p.m.
Marcus Bell was awarded his third CCAA Player of the Week for the week of Feb.24-March 2. Bell averaged 23 points and 13 rebounds for the week and continues to be the leader for the Warrior team and is a contender for the CCAA Player of the Year Award.
