April 26 through April 28 marked the nationwide celebrations of Earth Week. Earth Week events were held by ASI Student Government in collaboration with the Eco-Warriors Club and the Council for Sustainable Futures. Eco-Warriors president, Destiny Suarez, and campus sustainability coordinator, Wendy Olmstead, played major roles in facilitating the festivities. 

ASI started to plan and collaborate on this week of events about three months in advance. There were activities and giveaway items for all participants in the quad.

April 26 saw the annual Clothing Swap, where students come by the Eco Warriors Booth and engage in an act of environmentalism by swapping a piece of their clothing or buying an item of their choice for only $2.

April 27 was the Warrior Wednesday Pop Up: Love your Mother Earth. This event allowed students to participate in activities to show how much they love Mother Earth. Activities included answering quick questions about Earth and an opportunity to spin the wheel and win sustainable prizes. It doesn’t matter if anyone gets the wrong answer, but it’s that students get to learn some facts about the planet.

Suarez and Olmstead explained that they wanted the giveaway items to be sustainable items that students could reuse, such reusable water bottles, reusable straw kits, notebooks made of recycled materials and reusable tote bags.

On April 28, campus community members took part in Campus Clean-Up Day. ASI President, Cynella Aghasi spoke about how the event rose awareness of how simple actions can contribute to campus pollution.

“The campus clean up brought awareness to how much pollution is caused by confetti from students taking graduation photos,” Aghasi explained. 

“We hope to have brought awareness to climate issues with the facts about Earth activity and the impact of shopping second hand with the Clothing Swap and Love Your Mother Earth activities,” she continued.

Celebrations are expected to continue during next year’s Earth Week.
