Stanislaus State’s theater department is known for putting on unique plays for the community. Due to the pandemic, three years went by without the ability to put on certain productions

This year, the department decided to take on one of Shakespeare’s comedies known as “Much Ado About Nothing.” This production was directed by Stanislaus State’s theater director, Carin Heidelbach. 

Heidelbach explained that “Much Ado” seemed an appropriate choice for this year’s Theater Under the Stars, as it tells the story of folks coming home after a long absence.

The theater department held their first showing on Wednesday evening in the University amphitheater.

With it being opening night, the amphitheater filled noticeably fast with tons of students, faculty and community members. Another thing that immediately catches the eyes of attendees is the incredible stage design. 

The story is set in the 1800s in Sicily, Italy. This is around the time that Sicily becomes finally free from outside ruling forces. As the play goes on, the crowd is entertained with not only comedy, but also a love story. We are able to see two contrasting love stories evolve throughout the play. 

One is seen through a character named Claudio who is played by Pablo Hernandez, and his love interest named Hero, who is played by Chrissie Ford. 

The other couple is between Beatrice and Benedick, played by Laura Martinez and Teddy Snyder. We see their relationship unfold with many twists and turns along the way.

During the play, audiences are able to see how the lighting compliments each scene perfectly so that you can really feel the dramatics. The stage props, such as the large balconies, long stairs and brick like walls, can make audiences feel like they have traveled back in time to this era. Costumes were incredibly detailed and the color matched the theme very well.
