The CSU Stanislaus women’s basketball team had a successful first two games at home. The Warriors hosted the Stan State Women’s Classic, Nov. 18-19, inviting multiple teams to Fitzpatrick Arena. They faced Holy Names University, winning 64-47, in their home opener and beat Academy of Art 62-49 in the second game.
The only senior on the team, Nia Moa (Senior, Political Science), explained the feeling of the two games.
“Winning those first two games really helped our confidence because [we] are such a young team and knowing we got everything it takes to be great is important, but now it’s just making sure we can all stay together throughout the rest of the season,” she said.
Da’Myiah Lewis (sophomore, Biology) is returning guard for the team. She scored a total of 23 points in both games against Holy Names and Academy of Art in the classic. Lewis looks forward to this season and very excited to see her team do well.
“Being back and playing in front of a crowd feels amazing, especially when the crowd is on your side,” she said. “When we traveled for our first few games it was us against the world in the gym, but to be back at the Fitz with people who want to see us win feels great.”
The Warriors finished 12-10 last season and just missed the opportunity to go to the CCAA Tournament. With seven newcomers, they look to have a great season.
“I look forward to seeing growth within my team being that we are a young team and we can only get better,” Lewis said.
Joia Armstrong (sophomore, Nursing), the forward on the team, is excited to get back on the court and looks forward to playing this season with her team.
“It feels great to be able to play in front of a crowd having all our friends and family makes me happy to know we have loyal supporters” she said. She led her team in rebounds with 8 and had 10 points in the game against Academy of Art.
She is looking to be a leader for the young team that has seven freshmen.
“I look forward to building a good relationship with our new teammates and having team chemistry that shows on the court,” she said.
