On or off campus, the Learning Commons has numerous resources and free tutoring options to help students at CSU Stanislaus prepare for finals. From online workshops, supplemental instruction, and different tutoring locations they have you covered to successfully get through the end of the semester.
“We do a lot of experimenting and piloting in our department, and it reflects us being a dynamic organization,” said James Barnes Director of the Learning Commons at Stan State.
They spent a year trying new things and held an in-person time management workshop during Welcome Week, explained Barnes.
Their “Meet the Tutors” event in conjunction with a “Planner Party” was filled with scheduling tools, calendars, and highlighters that brought students together as a community.
Barnes adds that online workshops were implemented to help reduce barriers for students who do not want to attend in person or simply do not have the time but would like to participate. The idea was to provide workshops for students anytime, anywhere, even for groups, and departments to share.
All you have to do is visit www.studentlingo.com/csustan and log in using your my StanState username and password via the campus single sign-on page.
There you can watch such titles as Exam Preparation Tips and Test-Taking Strategies, Overcoming Procrastination, and How to Reduce Test Anxiety just to name a few. The workshops are about 30 minutes, with audio and transcripts available for each.
Creating access to services for students is important along with scheduling ease-of-use through StanTutor, says Barnes.
“We definitely tend to see more people during exam time for sure,” says Teleyna Sengsoury (Junior, Psychology), a Supplemental Instructor.
The Learning Commons is available throughout the campus most notably in the library but recently a grant and partnership with the College of Science and ASPIRE has provided Stan State students with a dedicated STEM tutoring and learning center, said Barnes.
The Commons is located inside the Naraghi Science Hall room 124 and is equipped with whiteboards, desks, pamphlets, mini fridge, and microwave for students to use.
This learning space provides STEM students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in the comfort of their department while providing valuable connections and time savings.
“It’s not just about coming to learn and build your skills,” explained Sengsoury, “It’s also a great way to network and meet other people.”
Lexi Anderson (senior, Biology), the SI Leader, had more to add about the applicability of their tutoring across the curriculum.
“It’s also about taking new skills beyond that particular class, beyond the session, so they are able to apply it to other areas,” she said.
