The CSU Stanislaus campus has been without Internet access for over a week now. While an update sent out in an email Thursday morning said the systems were beginning to be put back online, there was no solid timeline for when all systems would be restored.
Thursday morning’s email said that unusual activity had been detected on the campus network and the network was shut down in an abundance of caution.
” … the Office of Information Technology isolated and shut down the campus network, halting incoming and outgoing network activity to investigate and discern the cause of the incident,” the email stated.
It went on to explain that the first step in the process of restoring the system will be to have all faculty, staff and students reboot their on-campus computers and reset their Warrior password. Another email sent Thursday night explained the process.
By Thursday afternoon, the Office of Information and Technology (OIT) had set up stations on computers on the second floor of the Vasche Library to begin to process the first of the password resets.
Two Signal editors were present as Professor Jessica Gomula-Kruzic’s second floor video compositing class reset their passwords together.
During the password reset, students will be asked to present either their Warrior ID, a California ID or a driver license. An OIT assistant will then direct you to reset your password on one of the available library desktops by logging in with your existing password, where it will then prompt you to reset it. The entire process takes about three minutes to complete.
Jocelyn Noguez (senior, Child Development) was one of the OIT lab assistant’s helping reset passwords in the library Thursday night.
“So, basically, right now we’re in the first steps of fixing this problem,” she said. “What we’re doing is enabling their account, and from there they’ll be able to change their password.”
Once a password has been changed, Canvas should become accessible through www.canvas.csustan.edu on either a hardwired network, like the computers in the library or at other locations on campus, or on a personal laptop with another internet source. MyStanState is still not accessible at this time.
About 12,000 passwords need to be reset, consisting of about 10,000 students and 2,000 faculty and staff. As of 6 p.m. Thursday, only about 200 passwords had been reset, according to an OIT student assistant.
A steady stream of students who had gotten word of the password updates had begun to form a line in front of the computer stations by 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
The large crowd was a surprise to Dr. Rich Ogle, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, who said word must have travelled fast.
“This was supposed to be kind of a soft launch to work out the kinks, and it just snowballed,” he said.
So far, the process seems to be going smoothly, Ogle said.
“By tomorrow, we’re going to have stations downstairs and upstairs for students,” he said.
Once the password reset steps are implemented, students will be back on pages they haven’t had access to in over a week.
“It will get you back on email, it will get you back on all of the Office365 products, but once we get people through this process, Canvas is the number one priority,” Ogle said.
Passwords can only be reset in person on campus at one of three locations, according to Thursday night’s email:
- Vasché Library OIT Technology Support Center
Library, Room 256
8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 - DBH Learning Services
DBH 150 & DBH 288
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24 - Science 1 Open Computer Lab
Science 1, Room 102
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24
At this time, coming in person is the only way to reset your password to access Canvas and other available systems, according to Rosalee Rush, Senior Associate Vice President Communications, Marketing & Media Relations for Stan State.
She added that Stockton faculty, staff and students will be able to reset at the Stockton Campus on Monday.
“We are aware there are some members of our campus community who may not be able to come to campus to reset their password,” Rush said. “Information regarding the remote authentication will be provided once available.”
Students express frustration, but deadlines extended
The effects of the last week has left students wondering about assignment deadlines and faculty unable to communicate that information to them.
As students began to access Canvas Thursday after resetting their passwords, the relief was beginning to be felt by some. But the reality of a week without access to assignments was also setting in.
“I think I’m a bit overwhelmed with all of the assignments I’m going to have to catch up on,” said Neang Narkery (senior, Art).
She said she works as an online tutor, so she also had her hours cut back, since there was no way she could do her job. Overall, she has found the whole experience extremely challenging.
“I thought it was irresponsible that they didn’t tell us sooner as to why the Internet was gone, it was so sudden, and I can’t believe it lasted the whole week for the issue to be fixed,” she said. “It was really frustrating.”
Her frustrations were even more compounded since she lives in the dorms and has had to rely on her phone’s spotty data, which she said was very slow.
Ogle added that once professors are back in Canvas, they can assess the time that they’ve lost and begin having those conversations with students as to how to help them make up missing work.
The university has also implemented a number of extensions to deadlines that were to take place soon. In addition to the census date being extended to Feb. 28, tuition fee dates and scholarship applications have also been extended.
The deadline to complete the Stan State scholarship application has been extended to March 10. For additional information about scholarships, visit the scholarship information page or email [email protected]
If your spring tuition fees were due Feb. 17, the payment deadline has been extended to Monday, March 21, 2023 at 5 p.m. Questions about tuition and fees can be emailed to Student Financial Services at [email protected]
