On Nov. 12, the theatre department presented their play “Constellations” to a sold-out crowd.
A dark background and star-like light bulbs in different colors were all that was needed for the play’s setting. The set’s goal was to simply represent space, with the various colors denoting parallel universes.
The play was directed by theatre professor Jere O’Donnell and has successfully won the London Evening Standard Award for Best Play. Starring in this drama are California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) students Lexi Silva (junior, Theatre/English) and Sean Trew (junior, Theatre). The play is about quantum multiverse theory, free will, friendship and love.
“The characters in the play live their lives and we see their story as it might play out in the multiverse,” O’Donnell said.
The play has, so far, had great attendance and a positive impact on the audience.
“Audiences have reacted very positively to the show,” O’Donnell said. “I chose to direct this play because I’m interested in presenting audiences with unconventional ways of storytelling. I believe the playwright is experimenting with a different play form as well as integrating science and art which is happening quite frequently in the world of theatre and film.”
The Theatre Department will continue to present “Constellations” Nov. 19-21 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. General admission is $10 and $8 for students, faculty, staff, seniors and military. Tickets to the play can be purchased in person at the box office, over phone at 209-667-3166 or even online.
