The California State University, Stanislaus’ (Stan State) mens soccer team kept their dominant season rolling this past Sunday as they shutout Chico State 1-0 for their third straight win. The team is now 10-1-0 on the season and undefeated at home.
The lone goal for the Warriors came in the first half as Luis Hernandez (sophomore, Criminal Justice) stole the ball from an opposing defender and slammed a shot from 17 yards out into the net. The goal was Hernandez’s third of the season.
That score turned out to be all the offense that Stan State needed as goalkeeper Russ Klabough (senior, Criminal Justice) recorded his third shutout of the season, which is tied for fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Klabough has been great all season at protecting the net as he currently boasts 23 saves, 0.94 goals against average and .719 save percentage, all of which are in the top 10 of the CCAA. His eight wins as goalkeeper also puts him above all other goalkeepers in the conference.
With eight games remaining, the Warriors currently stand atop the conference with a 5-1-0 record and 15 points in conference play. Although, the California State University, Dominguez Hills Toros are right in their rearview mirror at 4-0-2 with 14 points.
The Warriors will not be facing the Toros until their last game of the season, where they may be fighting for the number one seed. Given how well both teams have played up to this point, it would not be surprising to see just that.
Stan State is coming off a successful four game road trip, and will play their next three matches at home. They look to stay on fire as they host the California State University, San Bernardino Coyotes in an evening match on Oct. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
