Greek organizations at California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) are showing how much they care about their philanthropy throughout the fall semester. With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Nov. 15 National Philanthropy Day, there are a variety of events occurring on campus.
The men of Kappa Sigma traveled to Sacramento on Oct. 18 to shave their locks for breast cancer awareness. Every year, Kappa Sigma attends the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk for Making Strides at the Capitol in Sacramento. Multiple brothers proudly volunteered to have their very own hair shaved off by breast cancer survivors.
They do all of this to raise awareness and enjoy every minute of it. Kappa Sigma’s very own president, John Cunha (senior, Business Administration-Marketing), went out to the walk and enjoyed every minute of it.
“We always have a good time and have a large amount of members attend, including our brothers and pledges,” Cunha said.
They will also be hosting “Klip-a-Kappa” on Oct. 21 in the quad. Kappa Sigma brothers will shave their heads in order to raise additional funds for breast cancer awareness.
On Oct. 17, Alpha Xi Delta hosted the Walk Now for Autism Speaks at Modesto Junior College’s West Campus, raising a total of $11,147. The ladies of Alpha Xi Delta worked extremely hard gathering donations for their philanthropy, Autism Speaks, and encouraged other Stan State students to form their own teams. Participants interacted with children and families that have been personally affected by autism.
Alpha Xi Delta hosts other philanthropic events such as “Xi Man,” “Twister Challenge” and “Football FrenXi.”
“Raising awareness for a cause that personally hits close to home makes my work and efforts worth it,” Alpha XI Delta Philanthropy Chair Angelica Quintana (junior, Business and Spanish) said.
Phi Sigma Sigma will support their philanthropy, School and College Readiness, by hosting a spelling bee challenge along with “Pie-a-Phi.” “Pie-a-Phi” is a fun event where individuals can donate money to pie a sister in the face. This event will be held on Nov. 4 in the quad from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The prices are, $3 for one pie and $5 for two pies.
They will also be hosting a spelling bee where participants will be spelling uncommon words from the Urban Dictionary app. This event will be held on Nov. 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets for the spelling bee will cost $5 during presale or $7 at the door. However, Phi Sigma Sigma is offering a ticket price of $3 with a donation of a school supply item. All proceeds go to support School and College Readiness.
“I love this philanthropy because education is one of the most important things a person can have and it is important to help others in need,” Phi Sigma Sigma Philanthropy Chairman Gabby Delparte (senior, Health Science) said.
Delta Phi Gamma supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month by hosting a week-long event they call “P!nktoberfest.” During this week, they hold multiple events, including bra pong. They also have boys wear bras while advertising posters with breast cancer statistics listed on them.
This year, they hosted this event from Oct. 12 through Oct. 16, and on the last day participated in a silent walk around campus to bring awareness to those that have lost their life to breast cancer. Delta Phi Gamma also participated in the breast cancer walk in Sacramento on Oct. 18.
