California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) is known for its peaceful, green campus.
Stan State’s safeness can be thanked by few of the individuals who promote a safety campus like Kellie Marshall, Safety & Emergency Management Specialist, and Clint Strode, Lieutenant at the University Police Department.
Kellie Marshall provides safety training to the whole campus: the staff, faculty and the students. Marshall makes sure that those who work on campus are doing their job safely and that they watch out for safety hazards. Furthermore, she makes sure that every Stan State employee is trained on potential active shooter events.
“We are also trying to implement a thing called ‘if you see something, say something,’” said Marshall explaining that if a person sees a potential hazard that can hurt others, he/she needs to report it in order for the issue to be fixed and no one will potentially get hurt.
Similarly, Lieutenant Clint Strode explains that working in the University Police Department (UPD), all officers keep our campus safe by securing big events such as “Stan Fest”, “Warrior Day” and other big events that may occur on campus.
Stan State and its students are maintained safe by the UPD by providing steering wheel clubs, when they are available, for students’ vehicles not to be stolen either.
The blue light phones that are placed around campus are another form of safety. By pressing the button on them, a dispatcher rapidly responds. On weekdays, the calls are forwarded to the UPD, and on weekends the calls are forwarded to Turlock Police Department (TPD). Students are advised to use these blue emergency phones if they see anything happening around them that is maybe not safe.
“One of the biggest problems that we face here at UPD is things being reported hours, or days, after they occur, and a lot of times it is difficult for us to go back and solve something…,” said Officer Strode while stressing that students should report anything instantly in order for UPD to respond and keep the campus safe.
Also, by going to the Stan Alert webpage, founded within the CSUStan main page, students can sign up for either emails, text messages or voicemails to receive the latest emergency news around Stan State.
Stan State reassures students’ safety by providing the evening shuttle program from Monday to Thursday at 6pm-12am, and 6-10pm on Fridays. Students can text their location to 277-8940 and get picked up by a shuttle, or by also calling 667-3114. This program is very efficient and convenient if a student does not want to walk in plain darkness to their car or any part of the campus.
