Snapchat has become an extremely popular application to share photographs, as well as short video clips with friends. The messaging application has added a stylistic overlay known as a Geofilter that can be accessed while in certain locations. The unique Snapchat feature allows you to select stylistic filters that symbolically represent the geographical area in which you took the picture or video.
Juan Gutierrez (senior, Geography) was instantly fascinated with the geographical depictions the app allows.
“One of the features that instantly caught my attention were the Geofilters. Since I’m a Geographer I fell in love with the idea of having to travel to a certain location on the planet and getting a unique image or banner to use on you images or videos that you can’t get anywhere else in the world,” Gutierrez said.
Driven by curiosity, Gutierrez looked up websites that provided lists of active Geofilters around California. One of the things he noticed was that some of his favorite travel spots did not have Geofilters available.
One of those frequent travel spots was the California State University, Stanislaus (Stan State) campus. Unlike many other universities in the area, Stan State had yet to have one.
After a little investigating, he learned that snapchat.com provides steps for the design and development of Geofilters.
Snapchat approved Gutierrez’s Stan State filter design and the Geofilter launched on Aug. 20, 2015. To access the new feature, first make sure you are on the Stan State campus. Then, simply capture a photo or video and swipe left on the screen until the Geofilter appears.
Gutierrez was able to accomplish his goal of creating something significant that allows students, faculty and the community to share moments on campus in an enjoyable fashion.
