The first week of the 2015 National Football League (NFL) season is in the books, and there was no shortage of action or entertainment. Many headlines were buzzing from the weekend including massive injuries, one complete late game meltdown and somebody blaming the New England Patriots of cheating as usual.
Luckily for San Francisco 49ers fans, you were not included in any of the latter headlines and started off the season with a win.
The 49ers cruised to a 20-3 victory at Levi’s Stadium against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football in a game that featured a lot of sloppy play.
After having their first field goal blocked, the 49ers could not seem to get much going with the passing game so they decided to give the load to running back Carlos Hyde. Hyde did not disappoint and had a career night with 168 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
The 49ers fans had to have been thinking “Remember Frank Who?”, referring to Frank Gore, their running back for the previous 10 seasons who left via free agency this past off season.
49ers’ quarterback and Turlock native, Colin Kaepernick, had an okay night throwing for 165 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers. Kaepernick also did have 41 yards on the ground, but his play was overshadowed by Hyde’s fantastic night.
Next weekend, the 49ers will travel to Pittsburgh to battle the Pittsburgh Steelers in a morning game at 10.
The other Bay Area team, the Oakland Raiders, were not so lucky as they fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 33-13 in an awful season debut for new head coach Jack Del Rio.
The Raiders could not get anything going on offense until it was too late. To make matters worse, quarterback Derek Carr went down with an injury to his throwing hand.
The Bengals ran through the Raiders and were up 33-0 in the fourth quarter until the Raiders were able to muster 13 points with backup quarterback Matt McGloin to prevent being shut out at home.
The Raiders will host the Baltimore Ravens in an afternoon match up beginning at 1:05 p.m. Sep 20.
